I don’t expect many of you will go today and sell everything that you have and give the money to the poor. But if you’d like to, the ushers will be standing by, just in case. The truth is we’re missing something too. Our will is still bound to sin, we are still unable to fully be as we were created to be, unafraid, unselfish, fully trusting in the goodness of God, especially if we’ve already suffered, already been hurt by the world, and the people in it. We are unable to do for ourselves what is really needed.

As Christians, we know that real power – the power to forgive, heal, and bring life from death belongs to God, is reveled in Jesus, and even given to us through the Holy Spirit. As ones who carry that good news to others, we have power – to be light in the darkness, to cast out fear, and to share the heart of Christ. The real power we wield is knowing that the love of God in Jesus has freed us from despair, from our own failings, and our selfishness. That power is engaged and put to use in acts service to our neighbors, in listening to the needs of those around us, in speaking on the behalf of people in need, in caring for the world God loves.

We know the story of the cross and the part after too – Jesus doesn’t stay in the tomb. Spoiler alert – it’s still the season of Epiphany but we are Easter people – Jesus is alive and the Word is among us! We have been fed, watered, and given the gift of growth through the Holy Spirit, called and sent, planted to grow and produce that good juicy fruit that feeds the world. We don’t know it all. It’s why we can hear these stories over and over again, and they have meaning for us in that we wrestle with the Word, we gather together to hear what it can say to us here and now. We wonder about the future, about what God is doing in our world, and when all else fails, trust that God’s grace is enough, hold onto faith, and keep our eyes on Jesus.

I want to imagine he took that mat – it was s symbol of his old life – and everywhere he went he showed it to people. Like a kid showing off their new Christmas gift! Maybe he gave talks to the youth group in the synagogue, and told how Jesus changed his life, how he once was unable to move, and with a little help from his friends, he found a new life. And everyone who heard it would have been amazed.
